Mpox in Pakistan 2026: Symptoms, Isolation & Home Care
Sindh has recorded 93 confirmed mpox cases this year, with 11 deaths — and the numbers are still climbing: 20 cases in September and more already in October. Health authorities are urging stronger surveillance and household awareness. Here is what every family needs to know about mpox: how to recognise it, how to isolate safely at home, and when to seek hospital care.
Mpox in Pakistan right now: the situation
- Sindh's tally: 93 confirmed cases and 11 deaths so far in 2026, per the provincial health department (Dawn, October 7).
- Rising trend: April recorded the most cases (31), but September's 20 cases and fresh October cases show infections are increasing again (The Express Tribune, October 8).
- Most affected: Karachi leads with 26 cases, followed by Khairpur (22) and Sukkur (9). Men account for 70 of the cases; the 30–39 age group is the most affected.
- Latest case: A 50-year-old man from Qazi Ahmed, Nawabshah — already unwell with chronic kidney disease and on dialysis — is under treatment at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital & Research Centre.
What is mpox?
Mpox (formerly called monkeypox) is a viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus. It spreads through close contact with the rash, sores or body fluids of an infected person, through prolonged face-to-face contact (respiratory droplets), and through contaminated materials such as bedding, towels or clothing. It does not spread through casual, brief contact — but household members and caregivers are at real risk, which is why isolation matters.
Mpox symptoms to watch for
Symptoms usually appear 6–13 days after exposure (range: 5–21 days) and last 2–4 weeks:
- Fever and chills in the early days
- Headache, muscle aches and back pain
- Swollen lymph nodes — a distinctive feature of mpox
- Rash that progresses into raised bumps, then fluid-filled blisters that scab over
- Low energy and exhaustion
- Sore throat in some patients
⚠️ Warning signs — seek hospital care immediately
Mpox is usually self-limiting, but complications can be serious, especially for children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immunity or chronic illness:
- Trouble breathing or chest pain
- Severe dehydration — very little urine, dizziness, dry mouth
- Spreading skin infection: increasing redness, swelling, pus, or a foul smell around sores
- Eye involvement — pain, redness, or vision changes
- Confusion, severe headache, or seizures
- Fever that does not settle after the usual course of illness
Do not wait. The latest Sindh death involved a patient with chronic kidney disease — underlying illness makes mpox more dangerous. High-risk patients should be evaluated in a hospital early.
Isolation at home: what the guidelines say
Pakistan's national guidelines are clear: an infected person should remain isolated until the rash has fully healed, all scabs have fallen off, and a fresh layer of skin has formed. That is usually 2–4 weeks. Practical steps for the household:
- Separate room and bathroom for the patient, if possible; keep doors closed
- Do not share bedding, towels, clothes, utensils, or glasses
- Caregivers should wear gloves and a mask when handling the patient or their laundry
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap after every contact with the patient or their belongings
- Wash the patient's laundry separately in hot water with detergent
- Clean and disinfect surfaces the patient touches — door handles, tables, bathroom fixtures
- Cover sores with bandages to reduce the risk of spreading the virus
Home care during recovery
There is no specific antiviral cure widely available; treatment is supportive care at home for mild cases:
- Paracetamol for fever and pain, as your doctor advises
- Plenty of fluids — water, ORS, soups — to prevent dehydration
- Rest until the rash has healed and scabs have fallen off
- Keep the rash clean — do not scratch or pick at blisters and scabs; let them fall off naturally
- Monitor daily — temperature, fluid intake, and any spreading of the rash or new symptoms
- Avoid contact with pets and children during the infectious period
Do not apply home remedies or unprescribed creams to the rash without medical advice. Incorrect products can irritate open skin and invite secondary bacterial infection.
What about the mpox vaccine?
The WHO does not recommend mass vaccination against mpox. Vaccination should be targeted: close contacts of confirmed patients and healthcare workers handling cases are the priority groups. Pakistan has been urged to assess available vaccine stocks and access to international supply mechanisms before any larger outbreak — but for now, surveillance and isolation remain the main tools.
How home nursing helps with mpox isolation care
Two to four weeks of isolation is a long time to manage alone — especially when the patient is elderly, a child, or has chronic illness. This is where home nursing makes isolation safer:
- Symptom and fever monitoring by a trained nurse — so complications are caught early, not late
- Rash and wound care — clean dressing changes and hygiene support to prevent secondary infection
- Hydration and nutrition support — proper fluid intake schedules and intake tracking
- Household infection-control guidance — safe laundry, cleaning and waste handling routines
- Early recognition of warning signs — a nurse knows exactly when home care is no longer enough

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the symptoms of mpox?
Fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy and swollen lymph nodes, followed within days by a rash that turns into fluid-filled blisters. Symptoms typically appear 6–13 days after exposure and last 2–4 weeks.
How long should an mpox patient isolate at home?
Pakistan's national guidelines say an infected person should remain isolated until the rash has fully healed, all scabs have fallen off, and a fresh layer of skin has formed — usually 2–4 weeks from symptom onset.
How does mpox spread?
Through close contact with the rash, sores or body fluids of an infected person, prolonged face-to-face contact via respiratory droplets, and contact with contaminated clothing or bedding. It does not spread through casual, brief contact.
Is there an mpox vaccine available in Pakistan?
The WHO does not recommend mass vaccination. Vaccination is targeted at close contacts of confirmed cases and healthcare workers handling cases. Pakistan has been urged to assess vaccine stocks and international supply access as preparedness.
How can home nursing help with mpox isolation care?
A home nurse monitors symptoms and fever, assists with rash and wound care, supports hydration and nutrition, guides household infection-control steps, and recognizes warning signs that need hospital care. WhatsApp +92 308 3688218 to arrange a certified nurse.
